What is hypnotherapy?*

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the therapy that takes places during hypnosis. There are many definitions of what constitutes hypnosis but the simplest is that it is an altered state of awareness. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state and one in which we enter in and out of several times a day.

Hypnotic trance

We are often in a hypnotic state when watching a gripping film or engrossed in a really good book. Sometimes, when we are driving, we go into what we call highway hypnosis and find ourselves at our destination unaware of how we got there. Kids and creative people tend to make very good hypnotic subjects because they are used to suspending reality and regularly enter a world of imagination. However, everyone is capable of going into a hypnotic trance.

During a hypnotic trance the critical and conscious part of the brain is by-passed. When a person gives into a behavioural compulsion i.e. running away from a spider, tucking into a big slice of chocolate cake, having a cigarette or biting their nails etc. they are in a trance state, so part of our job is to get them out of that to enable them to control their behaviour.

How can hypnotherapy help?*

During hypnotherapy the hypnotic trance is used to create more favourable thoughts, beliefs and actions. Empowering positive suggestions are given to the subconscious part of the brain and because the unconscious mind is designed to keep us safe, if it likes the suggestions given, it is likely to accept them. The hypnotherapist acts a guide or facilitator to the clients wishes. If the suggestions are not agreeable to the client they will be rejected, so there is no chance that you will end up clucking like a chicken unless you really want to!

Hypnotherapy has many wonderful benefits, from helping treat anxiety, depression, bad habits and behavioural problems. Rebecca Sanderson is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and is trained to use hypnotherapy for a wide range of clinical conditions so why not check out the rest of the site to see how we can help you.

Hypnotherapy is also incredibly relaxing and many people practice self-hypnosis as a form of stress relief. The Mindset Clinic teaches self-hypnosis to our clients so that they can continue the great work done during sessions.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

In the first session Rebecca will spend most of it understanding the issue you would like help with. You’ll discuss how long you have had the particular concern, what you would like to change and how you would like to feel, behave, and think instead. Rebecca will then guide you into a wonderfully calm and relaxed state, giving you positive suggestions based upon what you will have told her.

What if I don’t like the idea of losing control, will it still work?

At no stage will you lose control. You will be guided into a relaxing state where you are more easily able to reach your goals. Rebecca will only work with clients who actively want to change and she will advise you if I don’t think you are ready when you have the free 30 minute telephone consultation.

A range of techniques are utilised. Some require a trance like state to be achieved whilst others take a more cognitive approach.  She will work with you to ensure the most appropriate technique is used.

Will you get me to do anything I don’t want to do?

No. Collaboratively you will define your goals. The treatment offered is tailored specifically to you. We offer a bespoke service and as such what may work for you may or may not work for someone else.

Is hypnotherapy safe?*

Yes. Clinical Hypnosis practiced by a trustworthy and professionally qualified therapist is completely safe for both children and adults. However, there are some techniques that should not be used on people with certain medical conditions.

Rebecca trained at the London College of Clinical Hypnosis, which at the time was one of only a handful of training institutions in the world to offer Postgradutate training in Clinical Hypnotherapy. As such Rebecca is well qualified and understands how and when to use appropriate techniques.

Hypnotherapy is not a regulated industry, therefore it is advisable to only choose a therapist who has appropriate qualifications. Feel free to ask them about where they trained. You can contact The General Hypnotherapy Register  or The Hypnotherapy Directory for therapists local to you.
