Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Treatment

Best Therapy for OCD

Is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) taking over your life?

  • Have you found that you are beginning to run your life around seemingly pointless repetitive rituals and behaviours in order to get any peace of mind?
  • Do you find yourself having thoughts that upset and bother you?
  • Are friends and relatives beginning to lose patience with you?

It is hard for someone who has never experienced obsessive compulsive disorder to accept or understand it. Truth is, it’s hard for people with OCD to understand why they think and do the things they do too! Logically you know that you have washed your hands thoroughly, that you have checked the doors several times, that you are unlikely to have hit a pedestrian whilst driving but the overwhelmingly powerful urge to check and repeat the behaviour continues. Usually, without treatment OCD gets worse, meaning that sufferers start to find that their ability to maintain normal lives gets harder.

Effective Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*

The Mindset Clinic uses a range of evidence based approaches to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. We have found that using a combination of approaches seems to be the most effective approach which is why we use the following:

CBT  – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Unlike most conventional approaches we don’t recommend Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as a standalone treatment for any anxiety related disorder. Most people with OCD are aware that their behaviour and thoughts are irrational. Compulsions and fear are stronger than logic. However, CBT is a useful tool once the anxious mind has been calmed and the principles of logical, rational thinking can then be applied to help maintain the benefits of our combined therapeutic approach and reducing relapses.*

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy ERP for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy is a type of behavioural therapy that helps people face their fears and let obsessive thoughts occur without ‘putting them right’ or ‘neutralising’ them with compulsions. The ultimate goal of ERP is to free people from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions so they get on with their lives.

Response prevention is key, because anything that gets rid of distress makes it impossible for us to get used to it. When people don’t turn to compulsions, they learn how to accept their obsessions instead of acting desperately to neutralize them. The thoughts are still difficult sometimes, but they no longer seem like a huge problem.*

Hypnotherapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*

People with Obsessive Compulsive disorder tend to be highly anxious. Hypnotherapy helps clients to relax so that when presented with their fears they feel safe. When they feel safe the compulsion to carry on with the compulsive behaviour subsides. It’s a bit like a dress rehearsal for the real thing. We then can use ERP to help the client practice becoming exposed to the triggers so that they are already feeling more resilient and relaxed. In our view this is a much kinder and more human way to alleviate OCD distress.*

NLP for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*

The Mindset Clinic uses hypnosis and NLP techniques to access the unconscious part of the mind where the source of the fear is stored to reprocess the anxious thoughts with more positive emotions such as feeling confident and calm instead.*

A compulsion is a learned response to a particular trigger so we can teach your brain to break the circuitry and create a more helpful response to the trigger instead.

How many sessions will I need?*

Every client is different and will respond at different rates to treatment. Because we use a blend of evidence based therapies to help treat OCD we have been able to speed up the process of recovery when compared to traditional psychotherapy or counselling, especially when you compare waiting times can be months to access these services.* However, it will require motivation and commitment.
